Year 5
NORTH AMERICA
In Year 5 we have been studying the continent of North America.
Physical Geography.
Our first challenge of the week was to identify and name the 50 states that make up the United States of America and the 13 Provinces of Canada. We investigated the varying climates within our continent and after conducting research, we created postcards imaging we had visited places like the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and the Rockies.
We then investigated extreme weathers and natural disasters which have effected the ecosystems and biodiversity of North America. We investigated the impact wildfires are having across the continent and presented our research as double page spreads!
Biodiversity.
We had a great time exploring the biodiversity of North America and researched the varied wildlife found in this continent. We created our own wildlife guides. here are some extracts of our fabulous booklets.
Salmon Run Investigation.
This was the highlight of our week!
We learnt about the life cycle of a salmon and how it is under threat. We conducted our own data gathering investigation in which we used a live web cam on Brooks Falls to track the number of salmon leaping in their journey up river. We became engrossed and fascinated by the bears. We identified the threats these animals face not just from climate change but also by humans who are disrupting the biodiversity.
