Sometimes I Feel Sunny

Tales for lockdown toddlers. Written and Illustrated by Gillian Shirlds and Georgie Birkett

Hello yellow day - together we can create a brighter future for young people's mental health

Reception

In Reception, we enjoyed a circle time talking about emotions.

We made shakers linked to the story Giraffes Can't Dance and used them to move to upbeat music.

Year 1

During Hello Yellow day, we took part in some yoga to calm our minds. We also wrote messages to our classmates about what makes them so special. We completed activities that made us happy, such as artwork.

Year 3

In Year 3 we shared the story 'Black All Around' and we talked about how certain colours made us feel and what they reminded us of.  We all agreed that yellow reminded us of the sunshine and it felt like a happy colour.  Afterwards we discussed our hopes and aspirations for the future.  We recorded our ideas onto 'hope clouds'.  Finally, we learned about the three part brain and its functions.  We had a lot of fun exploring the character Anger from the movie Inside Out and talked about why our brain reacts like this when we are feeling angry.  Ask your child about the three part brain and what happens when you 'flip your lid!"

Year 4

We discussed what mental health means to us, including different emotions we have experienced. We also discussed how it is okay to experience emotions such as anger and frustration, but also how we can deal with those emotions.

We looked at how we can manage our emotions and tried a bit of mediation.

We looked at positives that we each have as individuals and how these can keep us feeling happy. We also shared the positives we see in each other.

We created our our hope clouds to share our dreams and hopes for the future. We discussed how we could achieve these and any help we might need to do this.

Year 5

Sky Color by Peter H Reynolds

What color is the sky? Marisol thinks it is something other than blue. Written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds.

As part of Hello Yellow 2022, we looked at the book Sky Colour. This vivid and imaginative text explores the therapeutic and relaxing nature of painting. This ties in with themes of mental health. Over the course of the day, we created dream trees using a variety of different artistic techniques.

Year 6

During Hello Yellow Day, Year 6 had a wonderful time singing ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. We then discussed mental health and created portraits in the style of Andy Warhol based on our emotions, we expressed our emotions through the use of colour. Have a look at some of our work…
