Purpose of study

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Meet Frank French.

Frank is part of our Curriculum Crew who is introduced at the start of each topic and lesson, providing a visual link to lessons and allows our children to focus on the skills needed in the upcoming tasks.

Frank is featured as part of our Languages pathway journey - allowing the children to revisit and consolidate prior learning .

Aims

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  •  discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

2024 - 2025

Year 3

We have begun our journey into learning French this year. We have found out about France, it's location and important landmarks, learned some commands and how to greet others.

Year 4

Ma Famille

In French we have been identifying different family members and how to pronounce and introduce them. We have explored different ways to describe families, including how many brothers and sisters a family may have. We also applied our French learning to answering questions from a French letter.

Year 6

Food & Drink

In French, we are learning all about food and drink. We looked at names of drinks and identified whether they were masculine or feminine creating sentences based on this.

2023-2024

Year 3

We have begun our French lessons in Year 3 this year by learning how to greet each other in French, learn basic commands and about places in France.

We are enjoying learning about colours in French!

Year 5

We have been busy in Year 5 revising our knowledge and pronunciation of numbers 1-60 to help us to tell the time in French.
