In Year 4 we enjoy a broad and balanced, cross curricular curriculum which challenges us, explores a range of topics and enables us to achieve our full potential.

Red Nose Day
We had a fantastic time taking part in Red Nose Day and raising money for such an important cause! The children came to school full of excitement, many wearing red noses and bright smiles as they got involved in the day’s activities. The pupils showed great creativity by making their own red noses and coming up with their own hilarious jokes, filling the classroom with laughter. We were incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork, and kindness in supporting the charity. It was a fun-filled day, full of laughter, generosity, and a wonderful sense of community.
World Book Day
We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day! Pupils arrived dressed as a storybook characters, bringing their favourite books to life in a colourful and creative way. Throughout the day, we enjoyed sharing stories together, listening to some fantastic reads, and talking about the characters we love most. The children also showed their creativity by illustrating themselves as their favourite characters and designing their own unique bookmarks.
Valentines Biscuits
This term we made Valentines biscuits. We carefully planned our ideas, thinking about flavours, shapes and decorative details before bringing our designs to life in the kitchen. We also used our creativity to design thoughtful and eye-catching packaging. Our finished biscuits looked (and smelled!) delicious, and we are sure they will make wonderful Valentine’s gifts!
Tornado Art
As part of our Natural Disasters topic, we explored tornadoes through art! The children created fantastic tornado artwork, experimenting with swirling patterns, colour blending, and different textures to capture the power and movement of these dramatic storms. We had great discussions about how tornadoes form and the impact they can have, linking our creativity with our learning. The finished pieces look amazing!
Christmas Party!
We had a fantastic day getting creative with our party decorations in the morning, followed by fun party games and lots of dancing in the afternoon. Everyone had a wonderful time and there were plenty of smiles all around!
Roman Day
Our Roman Day was a truly memorable step back in time! We welcomed a Roman visitor who brought the ancient world to life, sharing captivating stories and answering all our questions.
The day was filled with hands-on activities—from reenacting gladiator battles to examining genuine Roman artefacts. We explored Roman clothing, weaponry, and everyday items to deepen our understanding of this fascinating era.
Together, we reflected on everything we had discovered, bringing ancient Rome right into our classroom. It was a day full of learning, excitement, and wonderful memories.
The Book of Wonders
The Book of Wonders.
Inspired by The Nowhere Emporium, we created our own collection of Wonders to include in the Book. We even used an AI tool to bring our descriptions to life!
Time Odyssey
Time Odyssey is an exciting new interactive learning experience which takes families on a quest through their local museum physically and virtually. We used a range of computing skills and problem solving to heal the rift in time, helping our avatars return back to their correct timeline. it was an exciting day and we had a great time.
Hello Yellow Day
Year 4 took part in Hello Yellow Day to support World Mental Health Day and raise awareness of the importance of looking after our wellbeing. The children dressed in yellow and enjoyed a range of mindfulness activities to help them feel calm, focused, and positive. They took time to reflect on their emotions, practise deep breathing, and share things that make them happy and grateful. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate kindness, self-care, and the importance of talking about how we feel.
Art
In Art, the children have been exploring the unique style of artist Modigliani. They learned how Modigliani’s portraits are famous for their elongated faces, graceful necks, and expressive eyes. Using his work as inspiration, the children created their own Modigliani-style portraits, experimenting with proportion, colour, and expression to capture a similar elegant and distinctive look.
Basketball
This term in P.E, we’ve been getting stuck into basketball! We’ve been learning the rules of the game, practicing our dribbling, passing, and shooting, and having loads of fun playing team bench basketball. It’s a great way to work together, stay active, and enjoy some friendly competition. Year 4 have shown fantastic skills and excellent teamwork!
The Dragon's Lament
After reading Jack Perlutsky’s poem “The Dragon’s Lament,” we discovered a powerful message: things are not always what they seem, and dragons are far more wonderful than the stories that make them seem frightening.
We imagined life from a dragon’s point of view, creating thought bubbles to share a dragons' emotions and ideas.
We made factual dragon information posters bursting with fun facts to show just how amazing dragons really are. We also created beautiful artwork inspired by these magical creatures.
Year 4 took part in an exciting whole-school art challenge inspired by Banksy. Using their creativity and artistic skills, the students reimagined the traditional balloon design, incorporating their own unique ideas and messages.
We used a range of techniques including sketching, shading, blending and colouring. Year 4 explored themes of hope, freedom and expression.
World Book Day 2025
We had a fantastic time on World book day! Not only did we look fabulous in our character costumes we spent the day celebrating our favourite books and book characters. We shared and listened to our favourite stories, drew ourselves as our favourite characters and designed our own Bookmarks.
We lost ourselves in a good book and set of on wonderful adventures.
Year 4 Valentines Day Bake off
As part of our DT Topic on Biscuits we were given the technical challenge of designing and baking a biscuit to give to our loved ones on Valentines day. We did extensive research tasting biscuits so we could design a recipe that would be delicious. We also designed our own packaging for our delicious treats.
Show Racism the Red Card!
In Year 4, we had an exciting and important workshop as part of "Show Racism the Red Card." A special guest visited our school to help us learn more about racism and how we can stand up against it. We took part in lots of activities and discussions, exploring real-life scenarios to understand the impact of discrimination. Through role-play and group work, we thought about how different situations might make people feel and how we can be allies to others. The session helped us learn the importance or respect, kindness and equality.
Roman Day
Our Roman Day was an unforgettable journey back in time! We were excited to welcome a Roman visitor who brought history to life, sharing fascinating stories and answering all our questions about ancient Rome.
The day was packed with exciting activities, from recreating gladiator fights to investigating real Roman artefacts. We explored Roman clothing, weaponry and everyday objects to gain a deeper understanding of this time in history.
Together, we discussed everything we learned, bringing the world of ancient Rome into our classroom. It was a day of fun, discovery and unforgettable memories!
Hello Yellow Day
On Thursday 11th October, we celebrated World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues with children and advocating for more support and understanding. And what better way to do that than with a splash of sunshine? That’s why this year’s celebration was all about saying, Hello Yellow!
National Poetry Day!
We had a fantastic time celebrating National Poetry Day on Thursday 3rd October 2024.
We created our very own free verse poems about The Nowhere Emporium and performed them in front of the class. We also looked at a range of poetry styles inspired by our class novel 'The Nowhere Emporium'.

Reading
Year 4 Get Creative with Aaaargh, Spider!
Our Year 4 children had a fantastic time reading the fun and engaging book Aaaargh, Spider! By Lydia Monks. As part of their reading skills lessons, the children wrote in the role of the Spider by writing a thought bubble about what the spider would be thinking throughout the story.
The class also created colourful information posters about spiders. These posters are filled with creepy, fascinating facts designed to teach others all about these amazing creatures, helping to unravel some common fears!
Well done, Year 4, for your creativity and hard work!
A member of the Fire Safety Team from Sunderland and South Shields Fire Brigade came in to vist Year 4 to speak to us about the importance of keeping our homes safe from fire. They shared some really useful tips on how to avoid fires, like the importance of checking smoke alarms regularly, practicing family escape plans, keeping flammable items away from heat, and being careful not to overload plug sockets.
