School Closure Activities

Following the government announcement of school closures from Friday we have prepared a home learning pack containing school closure activities for you and your children.  Inside our year 2 pack you will find a range of activities from across the curriculum. These are broken down as follows:

*A homework book - the grid in the cover of this book contains a range of activities linked to all areas of the curriculum.  The book can be used to evidence the lovely writing, baking and modelling you and your children complete. This can be in the form of art work, writing or pictures.

*A maths curriculum overview for Year 2 - This outlines the generic coverage of key areas of maths that would be taught in the term ahead.  Where possible this includes links to Youtube to explain how to complete each mathematical strategy. Where practical equipment is needed to support your child use household objects like toys, buttons, crayons etc.

*Reading books - Your child has been supplied with a reading book linked to their newest accelerated reading score.  Please allow your child to read this and quiz online using their log in card (supplied). Oxford Owl and Twinkl have lots of free reading activities which can be downloaded at your leisure to support your child's reading development.

*Handwriting books - Children have been supplied with have a handwriting book.  For those children without a joined handwriting scheme sheet please use the printed scheme in the front of the book to develop their fine motor control and letter formation.  The common exception words can also be copied in these books to practice spellings. These can be found below. Please practice both the Yr 1 and 2 words.

*Times Tables Rockstars - A login card has been supplied for TTRockstars.  This can be accessed on their website on most devices. Your child should be able to recall the 2,5 and 10 times tables by the end of Year 2.  Please encourage them to use this as a way of learning their tables.

As current guidance does not outline specific timescales for school closure please continue to check this page for further updates with curriculum links and ideas.  We wish all of our families and children well at this time.

Year 2 hard at work developing their measuring skills.

Keeping active

The Year 2 children had a lot of fun working with the sports coaches from South Shields football club. They designed and developed their own games which in turn developed their understanding of fairness and following the rules.

One hundred hungry ants 🐜

Lots of fun using ‘ants’ (raisins) to explore multiplication and solve multiplication problems.

The Tin Forest

Some fantastic home learning from Year 2. Whilst exploring the book ‘The Tin Forest’ the girls decided to make one of their own at home.  Amazing!

Developing art skills

This year the children have been developing their art skills using line, texture and colour.  We have looked closely at the work of Jackson Pollock and how different colours can effect how you feel about something or remind you of something else.
During our exploration of the text ‘The Tin Forest’, we researched facts about recycling and the children made these fantastic posters to try and persuade us all to get involved. I think you will agree that they are brilliant!

The Tin Forest - The children have loved creating these fantastic story maps to help them retell the story in their own words.
