This week in Maths, the children have been exploring times tables and practicing how to practically solve the problems by using arrays. Here are just a few snaps of some of the children hard at work. Please encourage your children to use Times Tables Rock Stars as often as possible. Just 5 minutes per night could really improve their recall of times table facts. Visit www.ttrockstars.com. If anyone has lost their password, please do not hesitate to ask the class teacher for another copy.
Marvellous Monet! We have begun to explore works of art by Claude Monet. The children enjoyed looking at a selection of the paintings and visiting each other’s tables in a galloping gallery to discuss what they thought. More work to follow...

Using the iPads to research aerial photographs of South Shields in our Geography lesson
During science week, the children in Year 1 undertook the task of finding out how many children and staff across the school were using single use plastic water bottles. We visited each classroom and counted the amount of bottles being used. The children then put their data together to make bar charts showing use around the school. The children looked at how plastics are used and what is reusable plastic and what is not. We discussed items that we use in school, like straws, where they ended up and how long plastic stayed on the earth. We explored alternatives to single use plastic and thought about small changes that we could all make. The children had a lot of fun collecting and exploring the data and have already started to make small changes for themselves. A few have even been trying to inform their parents on how to make positive changes too, keep it up Year 1!
The children have created these fabulous friends for Beegu. Inspired by what we already know about the story character the children have thought about features that the alien friends might have. After making the models, the children wrote great character descriptions to use in future writing. The children had a lot of fun making their models and coming up with funny alien features!
A friend for Beegu
In our R.E. lessons we have been exploring the area of Christianity and friendship. We reflected upon what it means to be a good friend and what a good friend behaves like. We made our friendship web by sharing with our friends what we liked and valued about them and this demonstrated that we are all connected through our friendships.

Inspired by our whole school world book day book, Tuesday by David Weisner, the children are using frogs and lily pads to explore halving numbers, making equal amounts and investigating odd and even.
An animated version of the story Tuesday. The children thoroughly enjoyed watching this book come to life on the big screen as part of our World Book Day activities.

At Christmas, 1CM decided to try a reverse advent calendar. The children brought items of food from home and we collected it in a box. We had two huge bags of shopping by the end of the term which we donated to The Key Project in South Shields. A huge thank you to all the parents for supporting your children with this project, they learned a lot about giving at Christmas and making a difference to others.
A superb retelling of this great story.
This fantastic story map tells us the story so far.
